Balochistan’s teenage girl Malaika Zahid disguises herself as a boy to become a boxer
Malaika Zahid a 14-year-old started when she was 10 and won many national level medals in this period. However, Malika had to disguise herself as a boy to success in this career.
For that matter, Malaika got her hair chopped and disguised herself as a boy. So, when she is in the ring no one can identify her gender. Malaika is the daughter of a Railway Police official and is the only female boxer from Balochistan.
According to her, it was not an easy decision as a girl. Being the only girl, she had to get her training with boys, who were not really comfortable training with her. So she decided to get a boy cut so she can blend in.
“I had to change my lifestyle so that the boys perceive me as an equal and nobody says anything snarky about me.” As she was the only girl she has had to fight the boys in the ring many times and has won against them as well.
Malaika has participated in around ten national-level competitions including Mini Olympics and succeeded in all of these. In fact, she remained the best boxer in six of these competitions.
Mailaka says that the same people who were against me playing are now proud of me. “When I started my boxing career, I faced many issues. Some of them still exist, but my parents have been very supportive. They have told me to face whatever comes in my way.”
She further expressed that she wants to play on the International level now. “Now, I want to play at the international level and win a medal for my country. I am also training for the Olympics and hope to win a medal as well.”
