The Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) as well as the Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, in his recent speech at the CARICOM Secretariat, Guyana has shed light upon the CARICOM-Africa ties.
During the speech, PM Roosevelt Skerrit, highlighted and honored the fraternal and enduring ties that unit CARICOM and African nations, and also reflects on the significance of continuously emerging strategic partnership to the people.
The relationship between the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Africa has potential to advance the priority areas of mutual interest, such as the Climate Change, Development Financing, Public Health and Reparations.
While noting to the above mentioned, PM Roosevelt Skerrit, added that, “Our alliance has made remarkable progress in the recent times. Reciprocal official visits by leaders of CARICOM and Africa have further strengthened our relations. In this regard, my fellow CARICOM Heads of Government were delighted to receive Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda, as a Special Guest during the 45th Regular Meeting of the Conference in Port-of-Spain, in July. That exchange allowed us to discuss matters, including health, digitisation, transport, telecommunications, and reform of the international financial architecture, strategically important issues for the people of our Regions.”
It is to be noted that, the recent opening of the AFREXIMBANK Caribbean Office in Barbados will also likely to bring push in development and promoting the critical trade and economic ties between the Caribbean and Africa.
Noting to the above mentioned, PM Roosevelt Skerrit, in the speech added that, “We understand the importance of solidifying our cooperation and transforming our proposals into initiatives that contribute to the sustainable development of our countries and the welfare of our peoples. I, therefore, look forward to the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between CARICOM and the African Union Commission Secretariats.”
