The President of China, Xi Jinping, has extended congratulations to the newly elected indigenous President of Dominica, Sylvanie Burton, as she assumes as her new chair. In a message to Burton, Chinese President Xi stated that Dominica is sincere and reliable friend in the Caribbean region.
He added that since the two countries set up diplomatic ties, they have always supported each other and treated each other as equals.
As per the Chinese President, the two nations have boosted mutual political trust and practical cooperation which has yielded fruitful outcome and boosting the ties between their people.
Xi also appreciated Dominica for what he said is the island’s unwavering support for China’s position on key issues and major topics of concerns.
The President of China further said that, “I highly prize the development of bilateral relations and am willing to work with the President Burton to take the next year’s 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties as the opportunity to lift the bilateral friendly ties to higher levels, so as to deliver more benefits to both people.”
The relations between Dominica and China got established in 2004 under the Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit-led Dominica Labour Party administration.
From the time since then, China has aided major infrastructure projects on the island including, Windsor Park Sports Stadium, the Dominica China Friendship Hospital, the New Town Primary School, the York Valley Bridge, and the West Coast Road post-Erike rehabilitation project, amongst others.
During the early September, it was announced that the China has agreed to fund the construction of six schools on the island, which totals the funding aid to USD 30 million.
Noting to that at that time, PM Roosevelt Skerrit, said that, “There is no denying that Dominica has benefitted from repeated expressions of true friendship from the People’s Republic of China.”
Burton was elected president of Dominica during the Fifth Meeting of The First Session of 11th Parliament on September 27, 2023.
