St Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew attended the official handing over ceremony of the newly built climate-smart home at Conaree and Taylor’s on Thursday, March 14, 2024. The smart homes are developed by East Coast Housing Development limited in partnership with the National Housing Corporation (NHC).
The day marked the grand unveiling of fully-furnished climate-smart model homes in Conaree and Taylor’s that represents a remarkable achievement in affordable housing.
The project is a collaboration between East Coast Housing Development Ltd and the National Housing Corporation (NHC) which marks a progressive move by the St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party Administration.
Reportedly, the homes in Conaree were presented to Shamarah Huggins. Whereas, the climate-smart home at Taylor’s was presented to Belinda Buchanan.
The prime minister was accompanied at the event by the dignitaries that consisted of Cabinet Ministers, Government Officials and family and friends of the new homeowner that marked a significant milestone in the government’s commitment to provide sustainable housing solutions.
The historic unveiling ceremony was led by PM Drew and Deputy Prime Minister Dr Geoffrey Hanley who also serves as Minster of Human Settlement. The Chief Executive Officer of East Coast Housing Development Ltd – Bryan Singh and the representative from NHC also attended the ceremony.
At the ceremony, Prime Minister Drew said, “We not only witness the fulfilment of a shared vision for sustainable living but also celebrate the hope and joy. These homes bring joy and happiness to their new home owners”.
PM Drew enlightened all about the government’s commitment to expand access to affordable housing and stated, “Our goal is to make many more people as happy as Shamara and her family are today.”
He highlighted the pledge taken by administration to build 2400 homes for St Kitts and Nevis citizens and marked the beginning of the fulfilment of that pledge.
The prime minister said that they made a promise to the people of St Kitts and Nevis that they would build 2400 houses. “We said to them that the houses would be stronger and they will be able to withstand category-5 hurricanes. We said to them that they will come with the opportunity to extend upwards for them,” added PM Drew.
Prime Minister also mentioned that they would come with basic appliances, cupboards, good tiling and all of the other amenities that would make a home fitting for the good people of St Kitts and Nevis.
He also added that beyond delivering a house of this type they also said that the house would be cost-effective as they are offering more at a lower cost.
