US SECRETARY OF STATE POMPEO’S STATEMENT ON KHASHOGGI ISSUE
Saudi Arabia’s senior journalist and a former general manager and editor-in-chief of Al-Arab News Channel, Jamal Khashoggi was killed on 2nd October, in Saudi’s consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. Since his death there has been a lot of allegations regarding his murder and a lot of statements appeared from Saudi and Turkey’s officials. On 15 of November, US Pompeo gave a briefing on Khashoggi murder and its consequences and possible steps that could be taken.
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR SENIOR JOURNALIST’S MURDER?
Regarding Khashoggi’s death, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has given different statements. Saudi first denied the death of the journalist and said that he left the consulate after few time of arriving in. But on 20th of October, the Saudi officials admitted that he had been killed inside the consulate after a fight had broken out. And again, on October 25, Saudi Arabia’s attorney general contradicted the statement saying that it was an intentional murder.
According to a top Turkey official, presidential adviser Yasin Atktay has said that he believes that, Jamal Khashoggi was murdered and his body was dissolved in acid. He further added that the murdered of Saudi’s journalist did that to leave no trace behind.
US SECRETARY POMPEO’S BRIEFING ON KHASHOGGI ISSUE
On 15 November, US Pompeo held a meeting, a statement by Pompeo reinforcing Treasury Sanctions on 17 Saudi Individuals, and says that the US will keep engaged with other countries to hold those responsible accountable.
The United States imposed sanctions on seventeen individuals for Human Rights abuse under the order of 13818. As a consequence of this action, all of these individuals’ assets within US authority are blocked. The engaging of US persons with them in transactions has also been prohibited. They have been sanctioned for human rights abuse because at the time of Khashoggi’s murder these seventeen individuals inhabited several ministries and offices of the Government of Saudi Arabia.
