The Prime Minister of Commonwealth of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit on Tuesday has extended grief and condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones in the school dormitory fire in Guyana. The entire incident took place on Sunday.
It is to be mentioned that entire incident has claimed almost 19 lives of the students who were studying at the government boarding school and several other injured as a fire swept through the dormitory overnight.
Notably, Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit took it to his official social media handle for mourning the loss, adding that, “I am deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of 19 students who perished in a secondary school dormitory fire in Mahdia, Guyana late Sunday.”
In the social media post, PM Skerrit also extended his prayers for the strength to their families and their loved ones who have lost their family member in the incident. Noting to this, PM Skerrit, added that, “I pray for strength for their families and healing for those hospitalized with critical injuries.”
On behalf of government and the people of Dominica, PM Skerrit added that, “The Government and people of Dominica extend sincere condolences to the grieving families and stand in solidarity with the Government as well as people of Guyana.”
At the same time, the President of Guyana, Dr Irfaan Ali, added that, “This is a horrific incident. It is tragic. It is painful.” He further added that his government was mobilizing all of the possible resources as he has requested help from the region.
According to statement issued by the Government of Guyana, “The fire broke out at about 10:50 p.m. Sunday in the dormitory building of a secondary school that serves remote, mostly Indigenous villages and is located in the border town of Mahdia, a gold and diamond mining community about 200 miles (320 kilometers) south of the capital, Georgetown.”
