West Watooka, Guyana: In a devastating incident at the Aurora Gold Mine on Saturday, a collision between two trucks resulted in the untimely death of Joseph Licorish, a 47-year-old from West Watooka, Wismar Linden.
The incident also left Nigel Denny, a 41-year-old from Georgetown, hospitalized with injuries to his head and body.
The collision occurred as Licorish, behind the wheel of motor lorry #TL-001, descended a hill near an open mining pit at Aurora in the Cuyuni-Mazaruni District.
The truck was fully loaded with stones in the tray during the accident. Denny, driving truck TL-19, was ascending the hill around a slight bend, carrying a whole load of rocks in the tray.
According to the report from Police Headquarters, Denny recounted that Licorish’s truck was approaching quickly and swerving into his lane.
In an attempt to avoid a collision, Denny pulled to his left. However, due to the short distance between them, the front portion of Licorish’s truck collided with the right-side front part of Denny’s lorry, causing it to flip onto its left side.
Both drivers sustained injuries in the collision. The impact was so severe that the entire cabin of Licorish’s truck was dislodged, with Licorish pinned inside.
Brave efforts from fellow workers led to Licorish being pulled out of the wreckage and rushed to the Aurora Health Center alongside Denny.
Upon arriving at the health centre, a doctor saw and examined both drivers. Tragically, Licorish was pronounced dead, marking a sad moment for his family, friends, and colleagues.
Denny, on the other hand, received treatment for injuries to his head and body. As of the latest update, his condition is listed as stable. Subsequently, both individuals were air-dashed to Georgetown for further medical attention.
The police release highlighted the presence of CCTV cameras mounted at a distance on a tower near the accident site. Authorities plan to review and analyze the footage as part of the ongoing investigation.
The goal is to gain a clearer understanding of the events leading up to the collision and to determine if any factors beyond the initial eyewitness accounts played a role in the tragic incident.
As the Aurora Gold Mine community grapples with the aftermath of this unfortunate event, questions surrounding safety protocols, road conditions, and driver accountability come to the forefront.
The investigation will likely shed light on these aspects, providing crucial insights into how similar incidents can be prevented.
The loss of Joseph Licorish is a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with the mining industry and the importance of stringent safety measures.
