In a spectacular display of endurance and skill, Odida Parkinson of District 3 (West Demerara) clinched back-to-back victories in the 10km road race as the 61st edition of the National Schools’ Cycling, Swimming, and Track and Field Championships kicked off.
Parkinson’s performance mirrored his triumph in 2022, where he dominated from start to finish, leaving his competitors in the dust.
Parkinson’s quest for excellence was evident as he aimed to challenge the race record of 35:32.92 seconds.
However, the lack of substantial challenges proved counterproductive, with Parkinson still managing an impressive finish time of 36:52.56s, albeit slightly slower than his 2022 record of 36:48.23s.
For more than half of the race, Parkinson exhibited absolute dominance, creating a considerable distance from his nearest rival. Spectators might have mistaken his run for a casual jog, so commanding was his lead.
Undeterred by the margin, Parkinson expressed determination to push himself further in the upcoming 5,000m and 1,500m races, promising even more exceptional performances.
Securing a distant second was District 5’s (West Coast Berbice) David Bovell, crossing the finish line with a time of 37:25.90s, followed by District 6’s (Corentyne) Solomon Lowenfield at 38.21.50s.
In the girls’ category, Vannytta Francis of District 9 (Rupununi) clinched victory with ease, completing the race in a commendable time of 46:51.96s.
District 10’s (Upper Demerara/Kwakwani) Royanna Hermanstyne claimed the second spot with a time of 49:09.51s, followed by District 2’s (Essequibo Coast & Pomeroon) Sheleima Alberts at 53:35.50s.
As the competition progresses, the spotlight now shifts to the inner circuit of the National Park for cycling and the National Aquatic Centre, Liliendaal, for swimming.
Both events are scheduled to commence at 09:00, promising intense and thrilling battles for supremacy.
Looking ahead, Track and Field will take center stage at the National Track and Field Centre from Tuesday to Friday, offering enthusiasts more opportunities to witness the outstanding athletic prowess on display at the National Schools’ Championships.
