“I spent some time in thinking in my mind whether I should go ahead and spent the money knowing that we are building the international airport.” The following statement has been shared by the Prime Minister of Commonwealth of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit.
While noting to the decision, PM Skerrit said that the decision to extend the runway at Douglas Charles Airport in light of the construction of international airport was not an easy one.
It is to be noted that the above mentioned statements has been made by PM Skerrit, while speaking on the Kairi FM’s The Heng Program. PM Skerrit said that he was not actually convinced that money should be spent on the project.
Notably, PM Skerrit added that, he had spent some time in thinking whether he should go forward and spent the money knowing that we are building the international airport. He said that, “But in my discussions with people who are advising me on this, I was convinced–originally I was not convinced–that I should spend the money on this.”
At the same time, PM Skerrit mentioned that he was eventually convinced that the government should go with the project to sustain existing flights into the island nation, mainly from the US mainland.
It is to be mentioned that the Minister of Tourism of Dominica, Denise Charles has mentioned about the runway extension project at the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association’s (CHTA) Caribbean Travel Marketplace in Barbados.
During which, she added that, “What we are currently doing right now is embarking on a project for expanding our runway, so we will be able to attract several other airlines partners to the destination, just like Delta and JetBlue.”
