Saint Lucia: Prime Minister Philip J Pierre writes a heartfelt note remembering the Nobel Prize winners ‘Sir William Arthur Lewis’ and ‘Sir Derek Alton Walcott’ who are considered as the renowned personalities of the nation.
Notably, the citizens of Saint Lucia celebrate Nobel Laureate Day on Jan 23, every year remarking the birth dates of Sir William Arthur Lewis and Sir Derek Alton Walcott.
Sir William Arthur Lewis is a renowned personality and is known for his contributions in the field of economic development. He was recognised with Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, in 1979.
He was born on Jan 23, 1915 in Castries, Saint Lucia. During his career period he served as Saint Lucian economist and the James Madison Professor of Political Economy at the Princeton University.
Sir Derek Alton Walcott share his birth date with Sir William Arthur Lewis, he was also born on Jan 23 in the year 1930 in Castries, Saint Lucia. Walcott is a famous personality who had brought laurels in the field of English literature with his poetries and plays.
Walcott is considered mainly for his unique and artistic creations in literature, especially in poetry and writing plays. Some of his considerable works are Homeric epic poem ‘Omeros’ which many critics see as Walcott’s major achievement. He was recognised with the Nobel Prize in 1992 for literature.
Remembering the two PM Pierre shared a post related to the same officially on his social media handle on Facebook and wrote, “Every year on January 23, Saint Lucians and the world have the honour of celebrating Nobel Laureate Day, which happens to be the birthday of both Sir William Arthur Lewis and Sir Derek Alton Walcott.”
Prime Minister added, “Today and always, may we remember them not only for their numerous accolades but also for their invaluable contributions in shaping this world and the homage paid through their work to our beloved island, Saint Lucia.”
Social media users from the nation also congratulated the Nobel winners and responded positively to the remembrance post.
