Saint Lucia: The Prime Minister – Philip J Pierre delivered a New Year Speech on Sunday, Jan 7, 2024. While addressing, the PM emphasised on bringing centric policies that follows the “One Nation, One People, Common Purpose” agenda of the federation of Saint Lucia for the overall development of the Country.
Considering the same, PM Pierre shared a post on his official social media handle and stated, “To the People of Castries East, thank you for your steadfast love over the last 26 years. One Nation, One People, Common Purpose.”
PM Pierre mentioned that the support by the society for the vulnerable section has increased by the government. He also said that in the new year, the government of Saint Lucia would make appropriate efforts to boost the investment in key areas, including infrastructure, housing development, seaports, airports and road rehabilitation.
He mentioned specifically that the redevelopment and modernisation of cruise infrastructure of post-Castries and the Soufriere are going to begin very soon by the Global Ports Holding (GPH).
Reportedly, the redevelopment work of the Hewanorra International Airport will begin shortly.
PM anticipated that the work for the construction of the four buildings of St Jude Hospital will be completed by June 2024.
In his speech he talked about the agenda of the government for the creation of a maximum number of jobs for the youth of the Country. he also assured the citizens that the government is determined to create job opportunities.
“We will make necessary reform in the tax system of the country with the review of tax amnesty policies,” said PM Pierre. He also added that the tax-payers owe the amount of over $600 million to the government.
PM highlighted the necessity of the Diaspora in the economy of the nation and said that they will introduce the law with the objective to encourage the residents in Diasporas to return to open business ventures in the country.
Several people supported and appreciated the announcement by the PM as he shared the World Bank report to unveil the progress of the economy of the Country.
PM also revealed that over 400 scholarships were provided to the students in previous two years. He added that $7M were allocated to the home care program for the care of elders.
In his addressal PM also considered the issue of Minimum and equal liveable legislation and ensured the implementation of Minimum wage law for workers across all sectors.
PM J Pierre said that the judicial system will also be strengthened to make the country crime-free. He also spoke on climate change and food and nutrition security and assured to bring appropriate policies.
