St Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew attended the official ceremony held for the construction of two Solar Powered Water Desalination Plants on Monday, March 18, 2024 at the Canada Estate.
The ceremony marked the significant milestone for the country, as it broke the ground for the Solar Powered Water Desalination Plant which was donated by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the St Kitts and Nevis Federation.
The ceremony formed a momentous occasion as it signified a major step towards the development of sustainability.
As per the sources, the desalination plant situated at the Canada Industrial Estate will be completed by this year, in 2024 that promises to bring the revolution the water infrastructure.
Notably, the plant will have the capacity to produce water upto 76,000 gallons, per day. Moreover, the initiative will also address the critical water needs and will contribute to the resilience against climate change impacts.
Considering the achievement, Prime Minister Drew expressed gratitude to UAE and said, “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the United Arab Emirates for their unwavering support and commitment to our nation’s development and prosperity.”
PM Drew added that by harnessing solar energy to fuel the desalination process, they are not only ensuring the access to clean water but also reducing the carbon footprint and advancing towards a more sustainable future.
At the ceremony, held on Monday the prime minister was joined by the members of the Federal Cabinet, Konris Maynard – Minister of Water Services.
This is a project initiated under the UAE Caribbean Renewable Energy Fund (UAE-CREF), by the collaborative efforts between the UAE and the federation of St Kitts and Nevis that has led to the creation of plants capable of generating fresh drinking water of 12 cubic metres, every hour.
The Minister of Public Infrastructure – Konris Maynard expressed the deep gratitude towards the UAE for their generous contribution through this bilateral partnership that enabled the grant funded for solar desalination project.
Maynard said that the initiative completely fits into the overall agenda of the government to achieve the sustainable island state. The public infrastructure minister added that the government is guided by the prime minister and is supported by the Cabinet who is committed to restore round-the-clock water supply in St Kitts and Nevis.
