Saint Lucia: Prime Minister Philip J Pierre has shared an appreciation post related to the bilateral cooperation with the Republic of China, Taiwan. He also talked about the Constituency Development Programme and four different projects by them.
While writing about the project the Prime Minister wrote, “Through bilateral cooperation with the Republic of China, Taiwan, we have secured grant funding for four projects and the Constituency Development Programme (CDP) that will benefit the people of Saint Lucia.
PM Pierre further informed that the four projects identified are as follows:
- Project-1: Provision of housing repairs for the less fortunate.
- Project-2: Sports Development Equipment
- Project-3: Rehabilitation of Human Resource Centres
- Project-4: Development of a National Disability Policy
Additionally, Prime Minister of Saint Lucia wrote, “Approximately $5.6 million were secured for the projects. The projects including the CDP funds will be deposited into the Consolidated Fund.”
He added that the officials are obliged to see the continuous support from Taiwan, “We are grateful to the Government and the People of Taiwan for their continued support as we invest in the people of Saint Lucia.”
The Prime Minister has also mentioned about the Taiwan project in his New Year’s address that he delivered on Jan 07, 2024. In his speech PM Philip J Pierre acknowledged, “The government and People of Taiwan Have continued to provide useful assistance to the People of Saint Lucia for which we are grateful.”
PM Pierre also expressed about this in his Budget Speech last year in 2023, reaffirming Saint Lucia’s diplomatic support to the government of the Republic of China, Taiwan and said, “We are grateful to the government and the People of the Republic of China, Taiwan, who have been dear and sincere friends of the people of Saint Lucia.”
Reportedly, The Constituency Development Programme (CDP) is financed by the Republic of China, Taiwan and aims to allow elected parliamentarians the opportunity and ability to fund small projects of their choice in the constituency.”
Referring to the Budget address 2020-23 PM Pierre mentioned, “My government has secured concessionary funding from the Republic of China, Taiwan and others, to cushion some of the negative impacts of COVID-19, compounded by the Russia-Ukraine conflict which has already resulted in higher food and fuel prices.”
From various analysis, Taiwan ‘provides useful assistance’ that extends to technical, financial, social engineering and helps in the advancement of Saint Lucia.
