The Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit has named Sylvanie Burton as the candidate for the election of the President of the Commonwealth of Dominica. The announcement about the name came ahead of the term completion of the current President of Dominica, Charles A. Savarin, which will be expiring on October 1, 2023.
It is to be noted that, the information about the following has been shared by the Prime Minister of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit via his official social media handle. Through the social media post, PM Skerrit said that, “I have named Sylvanie Burton as the candidate for election as President of the Commonwealth of Dominica. The term of office of the current President, Charles A Savarin, D.A.H expires on October 1, 2023; and in keeping with Section 19 (1) of the Constitution, I consulted with Opposition Leader, Jesma Paul on my nominee.”
Notably, Burton, 58, is from Salybia, Kalinago Territory and has also served as the Permanent Secretary in various ministries since 2014.
While sharing more details on the following, PM Skerrit added that, “She was Permanent Secretary in the Ministries of Community Development, Foreign Affairs, Trade, Youth and Social Services and is currently the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Rural Modernization, Kalinago Upliftment and Constituency Empowerment.”
It is to be added that, Burton is a former Development Officer in the Ministry of Kalinago Affairs and was District Development Officer (DDO) for many years. She has been a Justice of the Peace for 25 years and has served as Lay Associate in the Roman Catholic Church for over 20 years.
Moreover, she holds a Master’s Degree in Project Management and a Bachelor’s Degree in Rural Development.
While expressing the confidence over the name of Sylvanie Burton for the upcoming Presidential elections, PM Skerrit said that, “I believe Burton is eminently qualified to hold the position of President of the Commonwealth of Dominica and that she will serve our nation with distinction.”
