The Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, on Monday, February 27, 2023, held a press conference, discussing key issues going on across the island nation. From among the key issues discussed during the press conference, PM Skerrit put more light on the issue of the International Airport.
Noting to which, PM Skerrit added that, “The work on the International Airport is about to start in earliest. I am talking about the actual physical work of the movement as previously indicated the contractor CR5 has been mobilizing to begin construction. This is an ongoing process and this week, the heavy equipment for the construction of the airport is expected to arrive the former public works site is being prepared as a station ground for the equipment one can appreciate that project of this magnitude will need a large quantity of equipment which is not available in Dominica.”
“Right now, we simply do not have the capacity however, I am wishing to make it fundamentally clear that this doesn’t preclude the engagement of local contractors as well as owners who will have access to jobs during the life of the project. In fact, during the preparatory phase which included the construction of over 30 houses to relocate residents to the new Joe Burton development. The clearing of portions of the site and also the construction of offices and the construction of the lab,” said PM Skerrit.
During the address, he also mentioned that the construction of the airport will bring in massive employment opportunities for the people across Dominica, as government is focused towards utilizing the talent and the skills of local youth.
Referring to which, PM Skerrit said that, “I assure you that the construction of Dominica airport will bring employment opportunities for Dominicans who wish to apply for the jobs which are opening up as a matter of fact there are several residents of Woodfield and Wesley who have been engaged on on the side and many of them have left the National Employment Program and and move away from to the to the to the airport project and there’ll be a significant more who will be employed from across the country um the advertisement from cr5 is up and has been posted in communities along the north and north-east.
