The Minister of Sports, Youth, Culture and Community Development of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Oscar George has made advise to the people of Dominica to position themselves to do what is needed to receive the maximum benefits whenever international cricket matches are played in Dominica.
It is to be noted that, the advise from the Minister George came as Dominica is preparing to host the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
Notably, the Windsor Park Sports Stadium in Dominica is among the seven venues in the Caribbean that will be hosting the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 from June 4 to 30. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has made the confirmation about the sites, including Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Guyana, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago. Along with this, three more venues in USA- Dallas, Florida and New York will be hosting the matches.
Noting to the above mentioned, Oscar George said that, “What I will advise is that we make the most of any international game that comes to our shores. Just for the purpose of hosting an international cricket match the government has to find in the region of USD200,000 to contribute to the organizers for helping defer their cost. As you know cricket is highly expensive sport, but we continue to invest in the cricket as we believe that there exists a significant multiple effect through the local economy when cricket comes to the Windsor Park.”
Minister George said that, he is delighted that Dominica was named among the seven venues in the region for the World Cup.
He added that, “At first, I am very delighted that a major ICC Tournament is to be hosted in the Caribbean. We all know of the tremendous benefits that hosting these other events can have on a country, far less on a small island like Dominica, so we are excited to be named among the seven venues in the region for the World Cup next year.”
Along with this, Minister George has commended the governments of all the seven nations who have been confirmed.
