“Shelter facility will be activated by the mid of Thursday,” says Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit. It is to be noted that the following announcement has been made by PM Skerrit during the press address on Thursday.
While making the press address, PM Skerrit said that, “We are under tropical storm warning, this has been activated since last night. We all have to be in the state of preparedness and to use the next hours in finalizing our arrangements. The shelter facility will be activated by the mid of today.”
He has also shared the details about where and how can people of the different communities can make contact with the shelter managers.
While elaborating about the Bataka community in Kalinago territory, PM Skerrit added that, “there were some challenges in getting appropriate facility. So, residents of Bataka would be transported to Salybia primary school. What we have done as a part of our responsibility as a government is to ensure that every community has an access to shelter.”
“We have also been working over the years with the private homeowners who were facilitated and been allowing their homes to be used as shelter. As we recognize the approach of the government is to construct independent facilities. And so we started with Castle Bruce, we are having it in Jimmit, eventually, we are having it in Marigot, we’ll have it in Portsmouth, we’ll have one in Grand Bay and in the Roseau areas with the intention to move away from using schools as hurricane shelters,” says PM Skerrit.
He further mentioned that, “Evacuation or asking you to move to a shelter is a voluntary exercise. But it is in your personal interest to recognize that you are vulnerable and you are at risk, your life is in danger and your family life is in danger, and therefore the sensible thing to do is to move to a shelter. Let us work together.”
